FORT SMITH, Ark. - Texas A&M International women's basketball was unable to withstand the UAFS Lions on Monday, falling 76-65.
Both teams battled early and were even throughout the first quarter, but UAFS (7-16, 5-12 LSC) would hold a 20-15 lead going into the second.
The second quarter was all Lions, outscoring TAMIU (12-12, 5-11 LSC) 25-9 to open a 45-24 lead going into the break.
The Dustdevils made a strong push towards cutting the deficit in the third, putting up 26 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor and 11-for-13 shooting from the foul line, to trail 63-50 entering the fourth.
TAMIU momentarily trimmed the deficit to single digits in the fourth, but once UAFS went back up by double figures, it would remain that way until the game went final.
On the night, the Dustdevils shot 21-for-55 (38.2%) from the floor, but were 2-for-18 from deep. TAMIU would capitalize on 21 of 27 free throw attempts.
On the other side, the Lions shot 24-for-57 (42.1%) from the field, 13-for-28 (46.4%) from three, but were 15-for-28 from the charity stripe.
Freshman Angelique Morgan led the way offensively with 19 points on 7-for-15 shooting.
Redshirt freshman Madison Ansari followed with 15 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Barbara Turkalj chipped in nine points and a team high five rebounds.
The Dustdevils move on to game three of the road trip on Thursday, Feb. 9 for a 6 p.m. tip against Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas.
