LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International softball opened a three-game series with Angelo State on Tuesday, but in the doubleheader fell 9-0 in five innings in game one, then 3-2 in game two.
GAME 1: ANGELO STATE 9 TAMIU 0 F/5
Game one started quietly, as both pitchers worked fast in scoreless innings over the opening two frames.
In the top of the third, Angelo State would jump well ahead, plating six runs in the frame.
A sacrifice fielder's choice opened the scoring, then a two-run homer made it 3-0. The rest of the way, the Rambelles scored on an RBI single, RBI hit by pitch and RBI walk.
In the fourth inning, Angelo State plated three more runs on another RBI fielder's choice and single, as well as an RBI double.
Junior
Erika Cortez took the circle and threw 2.2 innings and allowed six runs, four hits, five walks and struck out five.
Sophomore
Tessa Ramirez concluded the game, throwing 2.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs (one earned), three hits, one walk and struck out four.
TAMIU had just one hit in the contest, a single by sophomore
Tajanae Davis, while three others combined for four walks.
GAME 2: ANGELO STATE 3 TAMIU 2
Game two had scoring right away as the Rambelles got a two-run homer in the top of the first by Paxton Scheurer, her second two-run shot of the day to make it 2-0.
Angelo State would add its third run of the game in the third inning off a Dustdevil error to make it 3-0.
TAMIU began to chip away in the fifth inning, plating a run to make it 3-1 off an RBI by senior
Darrian Smith.
Another run crossed in the bottom of the sixth when Davis singled in a run to make it a 3-2 game. Unfortunately for the Dustdevils, runners would be left stranded on second and third with one out to limit the threat.
Yet again, in the bottom of the seventh, TAMIU threatened, putting two runners on, but again both would be stranded to conclude the game.
Sophomore
Carla Arellano tossed the complete game, allowing three runs, eight hits, one walk and struck out six.
Offensively, TAMIU would scatter six hits, with Smith's 2-for-3 leading the charge.
The Dustdevils conclude the season series against the Rambelles on Wednesday, April 12 with an 11 a.m. first pitch as they look to take one in the series.
