Chacon Hits Walk-off Home Run To Split Doubleheader

LAREDO, Texas – Senior Mario Chacon hit a three-run home run to lead Texas A&M International Baseball to a split against Texas A&M Kingsville on Saturday in a doubleheader. The Javelinas won game one 10-2, and the Dustdevils earned a 7-6 victory in game two. 
 
Texas A&M Kingsville 10, TAMIU 2 
 
The Javelinas jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first, and led 6-0 after the top of the second. 
 
The Dustdevils earned two back in the bottom of the second when senior Leeandro Alfonzo hit a two-RBI single. 
 
Texas A&M Kingsville added one more in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh. 
 
Chacon and Alfonzo led TAMIU from the plate with two hits each. 
 
Graduate Student Joseph Garza-Delapena pitched six innings of relief and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out eight batters.

Kingsville jumped out to another early lead, scoring on a solo home run in the top of the first, but TAMIU answered right back when junior Ariben Gutierrez hit a lone home run of his own. 
 
The Javelinas took a 5-1 lead in the top of the third, scoring four runs. 
 
Senior Matt Kissamis singled in a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 4-2. 
 
Texas A&M Kingsville stretched the lead to 6-2 in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. 
 
The Dustdevils rallied in the bottom of the seventh, starting with another solo home run from Gutierrez to cut the lead to three. 
 
Kissamis doubled in a run to close the gap to 6-4 before Chacon hit his three-run bomb to win in walk-off fashion. 
 
Gutierrez and junior Joseph Cruz recorded three hits in the second game, and Chacon led the Dustdevils with three RBI. 
 
Junior Jan Cabrera started on the mound and pitched five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking one. 
 
Redshirt freshman Reese Petersen pitched one inning, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts, and redshirt freshman Mario Garcia pitched one inning of hitless baseball. 
 
TAMIU will be in action at noon on Sunday, April 23, against the Javelinas to close the series.
