Dustdevils Outlast Rattlers in 2OT Victory, 77-76

San Antonio, Texas – The Dustdevils (11-9, 7-7) traveled up to San Antonio for a Lone Star Conference matchup with the St. Mary's Rattlers (8-11, 4-9) Thursday night. Forty minutes was not enough for the two teams as TAMIU outlasted the Rattlers in double overtime, earning the 77-76 victory.

The first half did not seem to start in favor of the Dustdevils, but the team was able to capitalize on St. Mary's mistakes. The Dustdevils earned nine points off the five turnovers they forced from the Rattlers.

TAMIU shot 9-24 (37.5%) from the field and just 1-10 from three-point range. On the other side, the Rattlers shot just 9-21 (42.9%) from the field and 2-4 from beyond the arc. The strength of the Dustdevils in the half came from inside. Sixteen of the Dustdevils' 25 first-half points came inside the paint.

John Achebe led TAMIU in the first half with eight points, with Jaylen Thompson right behind him with seven.

The Dustdevils dominated the start of the second half, holding the Rattlers to just four points in the first eight minutes. The Dustdevil offense went on a 16-2 run and led by as many as nine. TAMIU shot 11-25 (44%) from the field and 3-8 (37.5%) from beyond the arc.

Shannon Strickland and Emaniel Alexandre led the Dustdevils in the second half, scoring nine points each.

Despite only shooting 7-23 (30.4%) from the field and 2-6 (33.3%) from three-point range, the Rattlers fought back and tied the game, sending it to overtime.

Both teams traded buckets to start the overtime period and the game remained tied at the halfway point. Poor shooting at the free throw line by the Rattlers, kept the Dustdevils alive down the stretch, and a pair of free throws by Alexandre sent the game to a second overtime.

The Dustdevils found themselves down seven with 1:27 left on the clock, but they did not give up. TAMIU closed out the game on an 8-0 run sealing the win with a steal by Strickland and the game-winning layup made by Damian Watson.

TAMIU shot 5-13 (38.5%) from the field and 10-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line in both overtime periods. The Rattlers shot 7-11 (63.6%) from the field, but costly misses at the free throw line made the difference.

The Dustdevils head to Austin, Texas to take on St. Edward's on Saturday, February 3 at 3:00 p.m.
