Laredo, Texas – The Dustdevils (5-18, 2-11) hosted the St. Mary's Rattlers (12-10, 7-3) in Lone Star Conference play on Saturday as the two teams battled through 15 innings of play.
Carla Arellano got the start for the Dustdevils and was lights out to start the game, retiring the first six batters she faced.
The Rattlers got on the board with two runs in the third inning, jumping in front 2-0.
The Dustdevils quickly answered back in the bottom of the third.
Kennedy Griego got TAMIU on the board with an RBI single that scored
Kristin Maldonado.
Victoria Gonzalez brought in
Katelyn Luera who scored via an error and tied the game at two.
Seven innings was not enough for the two teams as the game went to extra innings.
The Rattlers were threatening in the top of the 10th, but a great catch by
Kristin Maldonado stopped the St. Mary's rally.
It was the Dustdevils' defense again in the top of the 11
th, this time
Katelyn Luera making a great play to once again hold the Rattlers.
The Rattlers scored a run in the top of the 13
th with a sac fly, giving them a 3-2 lead.
Alana Garcia came up big for the Dustdevils in the home half of the 13
th, tying the game again with an RBI single that scored
Victoria Espinoza.
The Rattlers scored again in the 15
th inning giving them the 4-3 lead that would win the game.
Arellano finished her day pitching 14 innings, allowing three runs on 13 hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Zakayia Fredrick came in to pitch in relief allowing no runs on no hits with one strikeout.
The game marks the longest LSC game played by either team.
The Dustdevils and Rattlers started the second game of the doubleheader, but the game was paused in the 11
th inning due to loss of sunlight.
Game two will resume Sunday at 12:15 p.m. with the series finale coming after that.
