LAREDO, Texas — The Texas A&M International Women's Dustdevils basketball team used a dominant second quarter to pull away early and cruised to a 96–57 win over Biblical Studies (Texas) on Saturday afternoon at the Kinesiology Building.
After trailing 18–14 at the end of the first quarter, the Dustdevils erupted for 38 points in the second, turning a close contest into a 52–32 halftime advantage. TAMIU never looked back, outscoring Biblical Studies in each of the final three periods to secure the victory.
Jayden Smallwood led all the Dustdevils with 17 points, adding eight assists and four steals in an all-around performance. Angelique Morgan followed with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Jaela Wade chipped in 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including three 3-pointers.
TAMIU's bench provided a significant boost, outscoring Biblical Studies' reserves 39–11. The Dustdevils also forced 36 turnovers and converted them into 36 points, while holding a 19–5 edge in fast-break scoring.
Biblical Studies was paced by N'Tai Teague, who scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sierra Portis and ShiCoriya Orr added nine points apiece, but the Lady Ambassadors struggled to keep pace offensively, shooting 38.7 percent from the field.
The Dustdevils finished the game shooting 39.0 percent overall and knocked down 11-of-22 from beyond the arc, while also winning the rebounding battle 47–38.
TAMIU improved to 4–6 on the season with the win, while Biblical Studies fell to 0–10.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Jayden Smallwood, Junior, comes to Laredo from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is the daughter of Gene and Shannon and has four siblings. She is pursuing her degree in Kinesiology.
Smallwood delivered the most complete performance of the afternoon, leading all TAMIU scorers with 17 points while also dishing out eight assists and recording four steals. She consistently set the tempo on both ends of the floor, sparking TAMIU's decisive second-quarter run and anchoring a defense that forced 36 turnovers. Her playmaking, pressure defense and scoring efficiency made her the clear catalyst in the Dustdevils' 96–57 victory.
