Austin, Texas – In a back-and-forth battle between the Dustdevils and Hilltoppers Sunday afternoon, SEU relied on late offense to sneak past the Dustdevils 15-12.
The Dustdevils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a sacrifice bunt RBI from
Ciro Benavides and a triple by
JC Zepeda.
St. Edward's responded with four runs in the bottom half to grab a 4-2 lead.
TAMIU struck back in the third with a grand slam off the bat of
Eddie Saenz to reclaim a 6-4 advantage. But SEU countered once again, plating six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-6 lead.
Alan Vielma roped an RBI double, and
Joseph Cruz blasted a three-run homer to tie things at 10 in the fourth. After SEU added two more in the bottom half,
Haziel Cruz's RBI double in the fifth evened the score once again at 12-12.
However, St. Edward's pulled away late with solo runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the win.
Billy Winans got the start for TAMIU, tossing 2.0 innings and allowing four runs on six hits with one strikeout. The Dustdevils used five pitchers out of the bullpen.
TAMIU returns home to Laredo for its final home series of the season, hosting West Texas A&M from April 17–19.
