Late Goal Sinks Dustdevils in 1-0 Loss to UT Tyler

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University men's soccer suffered a devastating 1-0 defeat against UT Tyler on Wednesday evening at Dustdevil Field, as a late goal in the 88th minute proved to be the difference in a tightly contested Lone Star Conference matchup.

The Dustdevils (5-6-2, 2-4-1 LSC) battled the Patriots (4-5-4, 2-4-1 LSC) through 87 scoreless minutes before UT Tyler's Dennis Nyame broke the deadlock with the game's lone goal at the 87:03 mark.

Both teams struggled to generate offensive opportunities in the opening half, with UT Tyler holding a narrow 3-1 advantage in shots. TAMIU's lone first-half attempt came from Wade Melville in the 22nd minute, as the two sides entered halftime scoreless.

The Dustdevils came out with renewed offensive intensity in the second half, generating seven shots and four corner kicks over the final 45 minutes.

Heiko Droemer recorded TAMIU's first shot on goal in the 55th minute, forcing UT Tyler goalkeeper Niclas Becker into a save. Abner Zuniga followed with a dangerous opportunity in the 66th minute, but Becker again denied the Dustdevils to preserve the scoreless tie.

TAMIU continued applying pressure late in the contest, creating multiple scoring chances in a span of just over a minute. Aidan Williams tested Becker in the 80th minute before Jorge Delgado followed with another shot on target in the 81st minute. Both attempts were turned away as the Patriots held firm defensively.

Despite the Dustdevils' second-half offensive push, UT Tyler found the breakthrough in the 88th minute when Nyame scored an unassisted goal to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Williams attempted to respond immediately, sending a shot over the crossbar just 22 seconds after the goal, but the Dustdevils were unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.

Zuniga led TAMIU offensively with three shots, including one on goal, while Williams contributed two attempts and one shot on target. Droemer and Delgado each added a shot on goal.

Defensively, goalkeeper Benjamin Hafner played all 90 minutes for the Dustdevils, recording three saves while allowing just one goal.

UT Tyler finished with an 11-8 advantage in total shots, while both teams recorded four shots on goal. TAMIU held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks, including a 4-2 advantage in the second half.

The Dustdevils will look to bounce back as they continue Lone Star Conference play.
