Dustdevils Win Longest Game of The Season

LAREDO,TEXAS - The Dustdevils play their longest game of the season, a 14-inning contest against the St. Edward's Hilltoppers and win 5-4 at home Friday night.

SEU (22-16) got on the board first in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from Austin Page in a 1-2 count.

TAMIU (14-25) responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh after a two-run double from Ciro Benavides scoring David Benitez and Derek Garcia followed by a solo homerun by Eddie Saenz.

SEU bounced back immediately scoring three runs in the top of the eighth with a bases loaded hit by pitch, a sac bunt by Trevor Sebek and another hit by pitch scoring three making it a 4-3 lead for the Hilltoppers.

Trailing one heading into the bottom of the ninth senior Eddie Saenz hits a solo home run in a 2-1 count to tie the score 4-4 and force extra innings.

Both teams went back in fourth in extra innings, not allowing a single run to score until the bottom of the 14th inning. This when the Dustdevils found themselves bases loaded after a walk to Saenz, Iann Cobos reaching on an error, and Giovanni Malatesta being intentionally walked. To win the ball game Asahi Nakano watches a pitch in a full count fall low out of the zone, forcing the walk and the go ahead run to win 5-4.

The Dustdevils play Saturday in a two-seven inning game doubleheader inside Jorge Haynes Field.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Senior first baseman, from Laredo, Texas, Eddie Saenz, went 3-for-6 in today's contest collecting two solo home runs in a single game. Saenz leads the team now with five home runs in the season. Saenz is currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology.
