KINGSVILLE, Texas—The Dustdevils built an early 6-0 lead in the second inning and stop a Javelinas comeback winning 9-7 inside Nolan Ryan Field Thursday.
TAMIU (12-23) got on early with two runs in the first. Ciro Benavides got aboard with a single to right and found his way home on a throwing error by Javelinas starting pitcher Ethan Ortega. Eddie Saenz walks and finds his way home by a sac fly to right field by Asahi Nakano.
Dustdevils bring in four more runs in the top of the second with a two-run double by Iann Cobos scoring Jesus Sosa and Benavides followed by a two-run single from Nakano building the lead to 6-0.
TAMUK (19-16) responded with a massive comeback in the third inning with six runs with four hits. This included RBI singles by Joshua Prado and Nick Reyes followed by a grandslam by Isaiah Aguilar tying it 6-6.
In the fourth, Dustdevils Eddie Saenz got on base with an error by Javelinas second baseman Easton Hewitt and came home to score with a passed ball throwing error by catcher Jayden Martinez. This built a slim one run lead 7-6.
Dustdevils starting pitcher AJ Sanchez kept the Javelinas scoreless in the fourth and fifth, collecting two strikeouts one in each inning to collect four on the night.
TAMIU relief pitcher RJ Patrick took the mound to start the sixth striking out back-to-back batters in his first two faced.
Kingsville in the seventh, tie it once more with Joshua Prado coming home off a passed ball after getting on with a walk. Patrick walks two more in the inning before striking out Easton Hewitt looking to end the inning.
Dustdevils get a late two run lead in the eighth with a stand-up solo home run from Derek Garcia for his first of the season. This is followed up by base hits from David Benitez and Benavides allowing Saenz to hit a run scoring single.
Javelinas are held scoreless in the final two innings with closer William Boucher only allowing two hits, striking out the final batter of the game.
Dustdevils take game one of the road series final score of 9-7 and will play in a game two and three in a seven inning doubleheader Friday.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Freshman Third Baseman, Derek Garcia, hit his first home run of the season to take the lead late in the ball game with a stand-up solo shot. Garcia is the son of Victor and Monica Garcia and currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration.
