LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University women's soccer battled unbeaten Dallas Baptist University through a scoreless opening half before the Patriots pulled away in the second period for a 3-0 victory Wednesday at Dustdevil Field.
The Dustdevils (2-7-0, 2-4-0 LSC) held DBU (10-0-0, 7-0-0 LSC) off the scoreboard throughout the opening 45 minutes behind a strong defensive effort and three first-half saves from goalkeeper Maria Melendez.
TAMIU generated the first shot on goal of the match in the 13th minute when Arianna Arboleda tested DBU goalkeeper Josie Juvera. Arboleda added another attempt in the 24th minute, while Ida Kolaric recorded a shot late in the opening half as the teams entered the break tied 0-0.
DBU broke through in the 57th minute when Skylar Belanger scored to give the Patriots a 1-0 advantage. Leah Hurley doubled the lead in the 68th minute off an assist from Kylar Coffman before Riley Olsen added the final goal in the 79th minute.
The Dustdevils continued to create opportunities after falling behind. Arboleda put an attempt on target in the 70th minute, and Milly Garcia forced another save from Juvera in the 80th. TAMIU also earned all three of its corner kicks in the second half.
Melendez finished with nine saves across 90 minutes in goal for the Dustdevils. Arboleda led the TAMIU attack with three shots, including two on goal, while Garcia recorded two shots with one on target. TAMIU finished with seven shots and three shots on goal compared with 20 shots and 12 on goal for DBU.
The loss moves TAMIU to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in Lone Star Conference play.
