LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University men's soccer remained unbeaten to start the 2026 season, earning a 1-0 victory over Sul Ross State on Saturday at Dustdevil Field.
The Dustdevils (2-0-1) controlled much of the match offensively, outshooting the Lobos 16-4 and putting six attempts on goal. TAMIU also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
TAMIU applied pressure from the opening whistle, forcing Sul Ross State goalkeeper Fernando Hernandez into a pair of saves inside the opening two minutes. The Dustdevils went on to record nine shots in the first half while holding the Lobos without a shot, but the match remained scoreless heading into halftime.
The Dustdevils continued searching for the breakthrough after the break. Abner Zuniga put an attempt on target in the 69th minute before TAMIU created a pair of dangerous opportunities late, including a Heiko Drömer shot that was saved in the 85th minute and a Wade Melville attempt that struck the crossbar moments later.
TAMIU finally broke through in the 87th minute.
Goalkeeper Nicklas Berg-Eriksen helped spark the decisive play, providing the assist as Drömer found the back of the net at the 86:09 mark to give the Dustdevils the 1-0 advantage.
Sul Ross State had one final opportunity in the 89th minute, but Berg-Eriksen stopped Marlon Meda's attempt to preserve the shutout and secure the victory.
Drömer finished with two shots on goal and the match-winner, while Zuniga recorded three shots and Rafael Zaic added two shots, including one on goal. Berg-Eriksen made two saves in the clean sheet and picked up the assist on the game-winning goal.
The victory moves TAMIU to 2-0-1 on the season, while Sul Ross State falls to 0-3-0.

Heiko Drömer delivered when the Dustdevils needed it most, scoring the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lift TAMIU to a 1-0 victory over Sul Ross State. Drömer finished with two shots, both on goal, and broke the scoreless deadlock at the 86:09 mark to help TAMIU improve to 2-0-1 on the season.
Heiko Drömer is a senior center back for Texas A&M International University and is currently pursuing a degree in Political Science. A native of Berlin, Germany, Heiko is the son of Detlef and Andrea Drömer and was born on July 12, 2005.
