Kevin Griffin joined the Dustdevils as an assistant coach in 2014 after 11 seasons in professional baseball. The Roanoke, Va., native spent seven years at the pro level as a catcher and four years as a manager and coach.
Following his playing career, Griffin made his coaching debut in professional ball as the field manager for the Ruidoso Osos in Ruidoso, New Mexico. He then spent two seasons with the Amarillo Sox of the American Association, serving as the Hitting Coach. The following year, Griffin was named the pitching coach for the Grand Prairie AirHogs, where he guided the team to a South Division Championship. In 2014, He served as the hitting coach for the Sioux Falls Canaries, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Along with four years professional coaching experience, Griffin also has three years of coaching experience at the collegiate level - at both Laredo Community College and a previous stint at TAMIU. Griffin added a prestigious season in the Alaska Summer League as the manager of the Peninsula Oilers in 2015, where he led the team to a second place finish. He also has three years coaching at the high school level – Cave Spring High and Ronaoke Catholic High in Virginia as well as Merritt Island High in Florida. During his time as a High School Coach, Griffin led Cave Spring and Merritt Island High to two District Championships.
Griffin played Collegiately for one year at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., and three years at Ferrum College, in Ferrum, Va. Griffin was a member of three USA South Conference Championships at Ferrum while receiving first-team All-USA South Conference catcher, first-team All-Region, Academic All-Conference, holding the team batting tittle, Team Most Valuable Player.
Griffin began his professional playing career with the Evansville Otters of the Frontier League in 2004 and Ohio Valley Redcoats in 2005. In 2006 he played for four teams in one year after being involved in several trades. Griffin was named to the 2006 United League All-Star team as a member of the Amarillo Dillas and finished the season winning a league championship with the Alexandria Aces. The switch-hitting catcher had his best offensive year in 2008 with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, being selected to his third straight United League All-Star game. Griffin led the team in hits, doubles, runs scored, and RBI. Overall, Griffin played for nine organizations in seven seasons of professional baseball before entering the coaching ranks.
Kevin credits his knowledge and love for the game of baseball to his father, Mike Griffin - long time coach and former catcher at Elon University. Griffin resides in Laredo, Texas, with his wife Iliana and two sons Michael and Levi.
