Michael Johnson spent the last two years on staff at Hawaii Pacific University. He primarily focused on scouting and player development.
During his time at HPU, Johnson helped the sharks to an overall record of 44-16. He also helped the sharks to a 2017 PacWest Conference Championship, a Tournament Championship, and a NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. Johnson helped develop and coach one All-American, three All-West region selections, five All PacWest selections, a defensive Player of the Year, and even a Newcomer of the Year during his time at HPU.
Before arriving at HPU, Johnson served as top women’s basketball assistant at Brown Mackie (Kan.) of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. He primarily focused on defense and player development. He helped BMC to a four-game improvement from the prior season and a postseason appearance.
Prior to his coaching career, Johnson was an all-conference player at Kansas Wesleyan, where he scored more than 1,000 career points. As a four-year starter, he averaged 10 points, four rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in business management, with a minor in criminal justice and sports management. He obtained a master’s in communications at HPU in 2018.
