Nate Vogel enters his fifth season at the helm of the Texas A&M International women’s basketball program in 2022-23. Vogel was named the fifth head coach of the women's basketball program in April 2019.
In 2022-23, Vogel continued to lead the Dustdevils in a positive direction. TAMIU started the season with an 11-6 record, including win streaks of five and four games. One player earned a spot on the All-LSC First team, broke a program record for points in a game and won the 2022-23 Director of Athletics Award at the TAMIU Student-Athlete Awards Banquet.
In 2021-22, TAMIU continued its success under Vogel, earning yet another victory over an NCAA Division I opponent, as well as a trip to the Lone Star Conference Tournament, in which they won an overtime thriller over Texas A&M-Kingsville, to make its first trip to the quarterfinals. TAMIU started the season 11-1, solidifying the best start in program history. Three players took home All-LSC honors (First Team, Honorable Mention and All-Freshman). A fourth player took home the 2021-22 President's Scholar Athlete Award at the TAMIU Student-Athlete Awards Banquet.
In 2020-21, in the second year under Vogel's tutelage, TAMIU continued its tremendous turnaround, defeating two NCAA Division I programs in a five day span, winning the LSC South Division Championship and finishing the season with an 11-5 overall record and a 9-4 conference mark. The 11-5 record marked the highest win percentage in a single season in program history, along with the first berth in the LSC Tournament. Three players took home All-LSC honors (First, Second and Honorable Mention), as well as LSC Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-LSC Defense and All-Academic LSC. In the region, one player was named CoSIDA Academic All-Region. Two players were also named co-President's Scholar Athlete Award recipients at the 2021 TAMIU Student-Athlete Banquet.
In the 2019-20 season, Vogel led the Dustdevils to an amazing turnaround as the Dustdevils won more than double the amount of games the program had achieved in the previous three years combined!
Vogel came to Laredo after two successful seasons as the head coach at Miles Community College in Miles City, Mont. After taking over a program with no returning players and only six weeks to build the entire team, Vogel led the Pioneers to a 25-8 record and an appearance in the NJCAA Region IX Tournament Final Four in his first season in 2018-19. In addition to his team's success on the court, they were also successful in the classroom with a 3.57 team grade point average, which was good for fourth best in the NJCAA. MCC placed 5/12 players on the Academic All-American team and 8/12 on the Academic All-Conference team.
The Pioneers finished the ’19-20 season winning the early season Conference Tip-Off Tournament, Regular Season Mon-Dak Conference Championship, NJCAA Region XIII Tournament Championship, District D Championship and advancing to the National Tournament. Vogel's team finished the season with an astonishing 33-1 record. Vogel was named the Region XIII Coach of the Year, Mon-Dak Conference Coach of the Year, District D Coach of the Year and was a finalist for NJCAA D1 National Coach of the Year. Vogel also coached one NJCAA All-American, two NJCAA All-Region players, the Region XIII Tournament Co-MVP, the Mon-Dak Conference MVP, another 1st Team All-Conference player and one 2nd Team All-Conference player.
Once again, his team was as successful in the classroom as they were on the court, boasting a 3.72 team GPA, placing them #2 in the Nation. MCC also placed EVERY player (12/12) on the Academic All-Conference team and seven players on the Academic All-American team. In just two years at Miles, Vogel coached twelve Academic All-Americans and twenty Academic All-Conference players.
In addition to Vogel's work with his team on the court and in classroom, he and his team are heavily involved in the community, logging over 281 hours of community service.
Vogel was also named the head coach of Team USA's U19 women's basketball team at the United World Games in Klagenfurt, Austria.
Before arriving at Miles Community College, Vogel spent one season as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Black Hills State University (BHSU) in Spearfish, S.D. At BHSU, he was responsible for designing and implementing all game strategies and systems, recruiting and talent evaluation, practice organization, monitoring student-athlete conditioning and academic progress, and organizing travel accommodations and budget.
Prior to his stint at BHSU, Vogel served in multiple roles at Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo. over a two-year span. In his role as women's basketball assistant and recruiting coordinator, he was responsible for designing and implementing all game strategies and systems, recruiting and talent evaluation, practice organization, and monitoring student-athlete conditioning and academic progress.
As the head strength and conditioning coach for both the men's and women's basketball programs, he helped coach both teams to appearances in the Elite 8 of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and coached multiple all-conference players. He also spent a season as an assistant coach with the men's basketball program.
Vogel began his head coaching career at the high school level as he spent two years at the helm of the Lutheran High School of St. Charles County boy's basketball program in St. Peters, Mo.
Vogel got his start in coaching as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Ill. While at SIU he helped coach the men's basketball program to back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference Championships and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament.
As a player, Vogel was a four-year letter winner, three-year starter and team captain at BHSU. At BHSU, he led his team to a No. 2 ranking in the 1998-1999 season as well as an appearance in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division II Tournament. He also led his team to a Sweet 16 appearance his senior season in 2001-2002.
Vogel earned his Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from BHSU in 2002. He is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Kinesiology from SIU.
Vogel is married to his wife Tracie, and they have two children, daughter Cora and son Camden.
