Stan Asumnu

Stanley Asunmu enters his first year with TAMIU women's basketball, joining the staff in September 2021. While it might be Asumnu’s first season with Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), this seasoned athlete brings his hands-on experience to the women’s program.

Prior to coaching at TAMIU, Asumnu was the varsity first assistant coach for Sharyland High School in Mission, Texas where he implemented principles from his select traveling basketball team program, Valley Rebels Elite. Through both his positions, he provided individualized training, development and preparation for collegiate level basketball programs.

Asumnu, born and raised in Houston, started his basketball career at the Westbury Christian High School, where he won three state champions. After graduating from Westbury Christian, he spent one year in Chatham, Virginia at the Hargrave Military Academy.

A strong leader, Asumnu attended the University of Tennessee on a full scholarship where he played both basketball and football. He was the Vols shooting guard and small forward from 2002 until he graduated in 2006, while he was a wide receiver during football season.

Making several elite appearances, Asumnu’s accolades include:

2002-2003 NIT Tournament Appearance; AAU Junior Olympics: Recipient of the Joel Ferrell Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Player and Sportsmanship; Led Team to Championship Game (2002); 2003-2004 Coaches Award for Outstanding Defensive Player; 2005-2006 entered the NCAA Tournament as second seed; 2006-2007 Outback Bowl.

Never settling and with a passion for the game, he played in the NBA’s G-League for five years with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and was the organization’s longest standing professional commitment from any player or coach. During his time with the Vipers, he participated in numerous player appearances, basketball clinics, charity events and community outreach events to connect with underrepresented students and their parents.

In 2011, Asumnu also played overseas in Australia for the Sandringham Sabres where he led the team in points, rebounds and steals. During his time with them, he also led the team to a 4th overall finish that resulted in a play-off berth.

Asumnu is committed to inspiring on and off the court and has been involved with several community events such as youth basketball clinics, player appearances, and charity events working with kids with disabilities. His motto in life is “you must expect great things of yourself before you can do them” from the great Michael Jordan.

Asumnu earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management with a minor in Business Administration from University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Asumnu and his girlfriend Danielle are proud parents of five month old Izaiah.
