Final Stats
Laredo, Texas - A defensive lapse in the final minute of the match gave Dallas Baptist a 2-1 win over the Texas A&M International University Women's Soccer Team Thursday night at Dustdevil Field. In the 90th minute Stephanie Harrison found an unmarked Danielle Presley with a great ball, setting up a no-win one-on-one situation with TAMIU keeper Noemi Salazar. Salazar, who was spectacular for the Dustdevils picking up a game high eight saves, made her best effort to deflect the ball away, but the close range shot was too much to handle. T he Patriots outshot TAMIU 18-11 in the match, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Alyssa Flores led the Dustdevils with 3 shots, followed by Kirsten Jennings and Alyssa Oelschlager who each finished with two.
TAMIU got off to a slow start in the opening half, producing only four shots on goal compared to ten by the Patriots. Salazar was brilliant in the first 45 minutes, picking up six of her eight total saves. Dallas Baptist struck in the tenth minute, when a loose ball deflected to a waiting Hope Adams who fired a shot that glanced off the bottom half of the post and into the net. The Dustdevil defense would settle down for the remainder of the period and the game went into the break with the Patriots leading 1-0.
The Dustdevils were much sharper in the second half, peppering the Patriots goaltender with seven shots. TAMIU had several great scoring opportunities, including a shot by Alyssa Oelschlager in the 72nd minute that deflected off the post. The Dustdevils were finally able to equalize in the 89th minute, when Shelby Williams sent a cross into the box that was misplayed by DBU keeper Kerry Edwards. The Patriots attempted to clear, but Williams would not be denied sending the ball into the back of the net with a header.
What happened next, not many could've predicted. With 50 seconds remaining on the clock, a cross from Stephanie Harrison inexplicably found its way to a wide open Danielle Presley who fired a shot past a diving Salazar to secure the win for Dallas Baptist.
The Dustdevils overall record drops to 2-13-1 on the season, 1-7 in Heartland Conference play. Two games remain on the season, both of which will be played at home. TAMIU will host St. Edwards University October 29th and U.T. Permian Basin November 1st.
