Cano's Two Goals Lift Men's Soccer

Box Score WICHITA, Kansas - Diego Manzano-Cano scored twice in the second half to lift Texas A&M International University to a 2-0 Heartland Conference win over Newman on Thursday night in breezy Wichita, Kan.  The win keeps the Dustdevils in the hunt for their third straight Heartland Conference title.

TAMIU (7-4-3, 4-1-2 Heartland) broke the scoreless tie when Manzano-Cano tapped in a cross from Joan Vallejo in the 50th minute.  That goal developed from a free kick from Juan Ramírez from 23 yards out, with Ramírez sliding the kick to Vallejo who tapped the cross to Manzano-Cano just before the ball reached the end line.

The score stood at 1-0 until Manzano-Cano scored again on a spectacular goal in the 80th minute.  He received a pass Elkin Marin-Tobar near the mid field mark, then made a long run before maneuvering around a lone Newman (4-8-1, 3-4-1) defender to chip in a goal that all but secured the win for the visiting team.

Newman had two legitimate scoring opportunities.  A header on a corner kick went just wide of the goal early on and an unobstructed short-range blast was deflected by TAMIU goalkeeper Jesus Cisneros in the 77th minute.  Cisneros was credited with two saves for the game.

It was a physical game with a total of nine cards issued, five for TAMIU and four for Newman.  The Jets played a man down after John Senseman received a red card in the 74th minute after committing a dangerous tackle.

TAMIU will play a non-conference road game at Oklahoma Christian on Saturday before gearing up for two huge Heartland Conference road games next week at Dallas Baptist and St. Edward’s.
