Men’s Soccer Battles St. Edward’s to Draw

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The Dustdevils’ chances of claiming a third straight Heartland Conference championship took a big hit Saturday afternoon in Austin, as the TAMIU men’s soccer team fought St. Edward’s to a 2-2 draw.

With the tie, TAMIU’s conference record stands at 5-1-3 while St. Edward’s remains a half-game ahead at 6-1-2.  Each team has one conference game remaining with TAMIU facing St. Mary’s Wednesday night at home, and St. Edward’s hosting Dallas Baptist on November 3.   The Dustdevils would need a win over the Rattlers and hope for a DBU upset or tie against the favored Hilltoppers, for any chance to jump into first.  In their first meeting this season, St. Edward’s cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Patriots.

St. Edward’s held the advantage in total shots 12-8, but shots on goal was much closer with the Hilltoppers holding a 6-5 lead.

TAMIU keeper Jesus Cisneros and St. Edward’s keeper John Kaschak finished with identical stat lines, each allowing two goals and tallying two saves in 110 minutes of play.

Andrew Fox gave St. Edward’s the early lead in the 35th minute, taking a through ball from Matt McLaughlin and firing a shot past Cisneros to the far post.

TAMIU’s equalizer wouldn’t come until early in the second half, when Diego Manzano-Cano controlled a cross from Arturo Gutierrez before turning and firing into the net.

Daniel Riley answered for the Hilltoppers in the 59th minute, turning and firing from 12 yards out after shielding his defender from the ball.

It didn’t take long for the Dustdevils to equalize, as Joan Vallejo headed home his third goal of the season off a corner kick from Jovany Macias.

Each team managed only one shot the rest of the way, sending the game into extra time.  The Dustdevils were unable to generate a shot in overtime, while the Hilltoppers finished with just one.

TAMIU will play host to St. Mary’s University in the Dustdevils’ annual senior day game on Wednesday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m. at Dustdevil Field.
