Women’s Soccer Edged by #5 St. Edward’s

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – Ari Garcia’s early second half goal proved to be the only score of the match, as the TAMIU women’s soccer team fell just short against no. 5 St. Edward’s 1-0.

The loss drops TAMIU’s overall record to 11-5-1 on the season and 5-4-1 in conference play.  All five of the Dustdevils’ losses this season came against opponents ranked in the top 25.

The Hilltoppers outshot the Dustdevils 17-5 in the match, but held only a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.  Sol Medina led TAMIU with three shots, two of which were on target.  Aissa Pedraza finished with four saves, allowing just the one goal.

Garcia’s goal came from 25 yards out in the 49th minute and was her first of the season.  The Dustdevils were whistled for a penalty inside their own defensive zone in the 86th minute, but Pedraza turned away the ensuing penalty shot.

With the win the Hilltoppers clinched a share of the Heartland Conference title, which they will share with Dallas Baptist.  St. Edward’s owns the goal differential tie-breaker over Dallas Baptist and will host the conference tournament which gets underway Thursday, November 1 in Austin.  The Dustdevils will take on Dallas Baptist in the opening round of tournament play, as TAMIU makes their first conference tournament appearance in program history.  Official game times have not yet been announced.
