Women’s Soccer Stunned by Houston-Victoria

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – Despite a furious second half surge, the TAMIU women’s soccer team was upended by the University of Houston-Victoria 2-1 in overtime on senior night at Dustdevil Field.

After being outshot in the opening period 8-7, the Dustdevils were relentless in the second half outshooting the Jaguars 15-2.  Despite their turnaround, TAMIU was never able to find the back of the net hitting the post three times including once on a penalty kick in the final three minutes of play.

With only thirty seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Jaguars’ forward Sheilat Akapo vollied a rebound into the net to sink
the Dustdevils.  Akapo also scored the Jaguars' first goal of the game, sneaking a shot past keeper Kateline Jennings in the 31st minute after taking a cross from Alexx LaBaume.

The loss to the Jaguars was TAMIU’s only loss on the season not coming at the hands of a top 25 opponent.  The Dustdevils record slips to 11-6-1 as the team prepares to open play in the Heartland Conference Tournament for the first time in program history.

TAMIU’s lone goal was scored by Laura Twinem, who headed the ball past keeper Jennifer Sanchez off a long free kick from Paige Johnson.  The Dustdevils racked up 25 total shots in the match compared to 13 from the Jaguars.

Katelin Jennings started between the sticks for TAMIU, collecting three saves and allowing one goal.  Freshman Anna Martinez came on in relief early in the second half, finishing with one save and one goal allowed.  Jaguars’ keeper Jennifer Sanchez had a solid game in net, recording eight saves in just over 99 minutes of action.

The Dustdevils get one more day of practice before making the trip to Austin for day one of the conference tournament.  TAMIU will open against Dallas Baptist University at 12 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field on the campus of host St. Edward’s University.
