Men’s Soccer Wallops Dallas Baptist

Box Score LAREDO, Texas – The TAMIU men’s soccer team delivered a big win in their inaugural “Kicks for the Cure” breast cancer awareness game Thursday night, routing Dallas Baptist 4-0 at Dustdevil Field.

TAMIU dominated possession of the ball and outshot the Patriots 13-10 including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.  TAMIU keeper Jesus Cisneros returned to form finishing with two saves in his fourth shutout win of the season.

Eduardo Gonzalez and Adrian Elicerio each contributed a goal and an assist, while Walter Anoruo and Juan Narvaez each added one goal apiece as well.  Christian Hesselaa also finished with one assist.

“I thought we were better everywhere tonight,” said Head Coach Claudio Arias.  “I give all the credit to DBU for continuing to fight, but I thought we were just the better team this time.  This was a game our guys really enjoyed, at times they looked like kids just having fun which is refreshing to see.  I was very proud specifically of guys like Oscar Pompa, Jaime Cano, and Davian Perez, who started the game for us and executed exactly as we told them.”

Eduardo Gonzalez, a freshman from Laredo’s own Alexander High School, continues to impress as he scored his team leading fourth goal of the season.

“Wayo is learning quickly and becoming more tactically aware of the things he needs to do.  There was a period this season where we struggled to score goals and I think he has helped us to break through.  Elicerio has also been big for us and I think both of them are going to make major contributions as we move forward.”

David Balyeat led the Patriots with three shots, all of them on goal.  Jordan Koeppe and Landon Lacy each added one shot apiece.

Gonzalez put TAMIU on the board just seven minutes in, taking a pass from Elicerio then dribbling to his right around two defenders before shooting past the DBU keeper to the near post.  Gonzalez would then return the favor in the 36th minute, feeding Anoruo who took two nice touches before turning and firing.

In the 61st minute, Christian Hesselaa made a nice run up the right flank and followed with a better cross that skirted through the box to a waiting Elicerio who easily finished to put TAMIU up 3-0.  TAMIU’s final goal came just four minutes later, when Juan Narvaez scored his first goal of the season on a penalty kick, after a hard tackle in the defensive zone.

TAMIU improves to 4-4-2 overall on the season and 2-1-1 in conference play.  On Saturday the Dustdevils will host St. Edward’s University in a critical match as the race for the Heartland Conference Championship begins to takes shape.

“That game is always special,” said Coach Arias.  “It’s a big rivalry, we both come in with one conference loss, and I feel like whoever takes that one has a good chance to win the conference.  We respect them, but I feel like when we are at full strength we are very tough to beat at home.

The game between TAMIU and St. Edward’s kicks off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Dustdevil Field.
