Women’s Basketball Finishes 0-2 at TWU Tournament

Box Score DENTON, Texas – The TAMIU women’s basketball team is still searching for their first win of the 2012-13 season, after dropping back to back games over the weekend at the Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premiere Tournament on the campus of Texas Women’s University Tournament in Denton, Texas.

The Dustdevils fell to Angelo State University Saturday afternoon 73-56, before dropping Sunday’s game to Angelo State University 53-43.

In Saturday’s game versus TWU, the Dustdevils shot just 33.8 percent from the field and were outrebounded 47-38 by the Pioneers.  TAMIU also struggled from long range, connecting on only 5-26 three pointers.  TWU had three players score in double digits and shot 50 percent from field as a team.  Sam Chacon scored a game high 24 points while also picking up two steals, two assists, and four rebounds.  Amanda Mangan was the only other Dustdevils to score in double figures, recording 10 points on 4-8 shooting.

TAMIU once again struggled shooting the ball in Sunday’s matchup versus Angelo State, connecting on only 15-61 total shots (24.6 percent).  Tina Dang had the hot hand for the Dustdevils versus the Belles, scoring a game high 19 points, while Alexis Thomas and Rosebud Guthrie each pulled down seven rebounds.  Angelo State outrebounded TAMIU 41-35 and double up the Dustdevils in points in the paint 24-12.  Haylee Oliver led the Belles with 16 points on the night, scoring 11 of those in the second half. 

The Dustdevils trailed by only two at the break, but a couple of Angelo State runs in the second half pushed the lead out to 10.  TAMIU cut the lead down to seven points with 4:58 to play, but the Belles responded with a 8-0 run over the next three minutes to grow their advantage to 15 points and seal the win.

Sam Chacon was the lone TAMIU player selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Dustdevils will be on their home court for the first time this season, hosting Western New Mexico University at the TAMIU KCB on November 20 at 7 p.m.  Following their home game, the team will hit the road to participate in the Texas A&M Kingsville classic on November 23.  The Dustdevils will open tournament play against New Mexico Highlands University, before facing Our Lady of the Lake University on Saturday.
