Dustdevils Look to Reach New Heights in Fowler's Second Season

LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University women's basketball enters the 2026-27 season with high expectations, a revamped roster and a determination to take the next step under head coach Casey Fowler, who returns for his second season leading the Dustdevils.

With 11 newcomers, including five freshmen, TAMIU looks to build on the momentum established during Fowler's first season. Despite the roster turnover, the Dustdevils have developed strong chemistry throughout the offseason, creating optimism surrounding the program heading into the new campaign.

The team's athleticism and strong preseason performances have fueled high expectations. Fowler also referenced a previous 24-win season within the program, believing this year's roster has the potential to reach even greater heights.

One of the most noticeable differences from last season is the team's early chemistry. While last year's group found its rhythm toward the end of the campaign, the current roster has developed a strong connection dating back to the summer.

Fowler pointed to the team's overall athleticism and togetherness as major differences from last season. He noted that while last year's group developed its chemistry toward the end of the campaign, this year's team has established a strong connection since the summer.

Among the notable returning players are Carmen Morcillo and Abigail Martinez-Cora, who provide valuable experience and familiarity with the program as the Dustdevils prepare for the upcoming season.

Morcillo returns after establishing herself as one of the Lone Star Conference's top perimeter shooters during the 2025-26 campaign. She led the conference in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 35.9% from beyond the arc, while ranking second in the LSC with 2.3 made 3-pointers per game.

Alongside Morcillo, Martinez-Cora provides another experienced presence as TAMIU looks to combine returning leadership with the athleticism and energy of its 11 newcomers.

Among those newcomers is Bright Eze, a junior forward/center from Lagos, Nigeria, who joins the Dustdevils after spending her sophomore season at New Mexico Junior College.

Eze, who was named a preseason player to watch for TAMIU, appeared in 32 games during the 2025-26 season, making 23 starts. She totaled 65 points and earned all-conference recognition while also receiving recognition as the team's best rebounder.

Her physicality, relentless effort and ability to attack the basket have already made an impression on the coaching staff.

Fowler praised Eze's relentless motor and intensity, describing her as a player who consistently pursues rebounds and attacks the basket with exceptional aggression. Her ability to maintain that intensity on both ends of the floor reflects the natural competitiveness and effort that the coaching staff hopes will define the team.

That aggressive mentality will be central to TAMIU's identity as the Dustdevils look to establish themselves among the Lone Star Conference's top programs.

The second-year head coach wants his team to be known for an exciting, high-energy style of basketball built around relentless defense, athleticism and an aggressive approach that challenges opponents throughout each contest.

While expectations are high, the program remains focused on daily improvement rather than measuring success solely through wins and losses.

That process-driven approach emphasizes consistent development and execution, recognizing that certain losses can demonstrate progress while some victories may still reveal areas needing improvement.

The Dustdevils have set ambitious goals for the upcoming campaign, including a top-five finish in the LSC standings, an NCAA Tournament appearance and the opportunity to earn a victory on the national stage.

With the roster's combination of athleticism, depth and early chemistry, TAMIU believes it has the potential to accomplish milestones that have not previously been achieved by the program.

Despite the optimism surrounding the team, the Dustdevils enter the season looking to exceed outside expectations after being projected two spots lower than the previous year in the conference's preseason poll.

TAMIU finished Fowler's first season with encouraging momentum despite battling injuries, and the coaching staff believes that late-season progress has not been fully reflected in the preseason projections.

With a new-look roster, returning experience and a clear vision for the program, the Dustdevils enter the 2026-27 campaign determined to translate their offseason progress into results.

TAMIU will officially tip off its 2026-27 season on Monday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m., when the Dustdevils host Texas A&M-San Antonio in their home opener.

The upcoming season presents an opportunity for TAMIU to build on the foundation established a year ago, challenge expectations in the Lone Star Conference and pursue new milestones for Dustdevils women's basketball.
