WICHITA, Kansas - After a disappointing 4-3 loss in game one, the Texas A&M International University baseball team rebounded to take game two 11-4, splitting a doubleheader with Newman University Friday evening at McCarthy Field.

GAME ONE: TAMIU 3, Newman 4

In the opening game the Dustdevils shelled the Jets pitching staff combining for 14 hits, but stranded 12 runners on base and committed three errors to seal their fate. Newman took the early lead scoring two runs in the first before TAMIU answered with two of their own in the third. With two away, Roberto Castillo connected on an RBI double scoring Austin Voros and was brought around to score on an RBI single from Ramon Sandoval.

Newman regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a Jerry Hawkins balk after Jarrod Flax led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly. Tanner Vinson gave the Jets another run in the fourth scoring Jordan Ollenberger from third on a sacrifice fly.

The Dustdevils flirted with a comeback in the seventh after Castillo led off with a double and was brought around to score on a Sean Smedley single. With two away Jeremy Olivo was struck out looking to end the threat.

Hawking took the loss for TAMIU falling to 2-7 on the season after allowing four runs on eight hits with a strikeout and a walk through 4.0 innings. Five batters recorded multiple hits for TAMIU, but the Dustdevils finished only 3-14 at the plate with runners in scoring position.

GAME TWO: TAMIU 11, Newman 4

In the nightcap the Dustdevils jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, capitalizing on a Newman error in the top of the first. Jeff Anderson took first on a miscue by the Jets third baseman and advanced to second on a bunt single by Will Wurth. After Austin Voros drew a walk to load up the bases, Korey Gosselin belted a two run double to left field and Voros was brought around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ramon Sandoval.

The Dustdevils returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning, as a pair of errors allowed the Jets to tie the game at three. TAMIU regained the lead in the fourth off an RBI single by Wurth before blowing the game open scoring five runs on five hits in the seventh, all with two away, to take a 9-3 lead.

The Jets were able to get a run back in the eighth, but the Dustdevils slammed the door shut adding two more in the ninth.

Marty Bigham improved to 4-2 on the season for TAMIU allowing three runs, only one earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks through 5.2 innings. Anderson, Aruda and Smedley each went 2-5 in the game, with Wurth and Gosselin each going 2-4.

With the split the Dustdevils improved to 20-19 overall and 13-16 in conference play. The series will conclude Saturday afternoon, with game three scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
