Late Rally Lifts St. Mary's To 3-2 Win In Series Finale

April 28, 2012

Final Stats

A seventh inning rally lifted second ranked St. Mary's to a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International University on Saturday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field on the TAMIU campus. The result secures a three-game Heartland Conference series sweep for the Rattlers over the Dustdevils and knocks TAMIU out of the Heartland Conference Tournament race.

A fourth inning solo home run by Beto Castillo and a fifth inning RBI single to center by Will Wurth pushed TAMIU (23-24, 13-20 Heartland) to a 2-0 lead.

There were two outs with no one on in the seventh before St. Mary's (41-8, 31-5) took the lead with three runs on three hits against TAMIU starter Jerry Hawkins, who up until that inning had limited the Rattlers to two hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Only one Dustdevil batter reached base after St. Mary's took the lead and that was with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Matt Arruda reached first base on an infield error. The game ended, however, when Alex Salas flew out to center field.
