Women’s Soccer Earns First Ever Regional Ranking

Box Score LAREDO, TX – The TAMIU women’s soccer team is only two games into their 2012 campaign, but already they’ve made their mark in Dustdevil athletic history.

One week after their historic 4-0 win over St. Mary’s University, the women’s soccer team earned their first ever spot on the NSCAA South Central Regional Rankings.  The Dustdevils are currently ranked no. 9 as they head into their Tuesday afternoon matchup versus Huston-Tillotson University.

“I’m so happy for our girls to finally receive some recognition after years of hard work,” said Head Coach Claudio Arias.  “When news like this comes out it serves as a huge motivator for our girls to continue to work hard as we move through the season.  I think this is just one more indicator that the women’s soccer team at TAMIU is progressing and improving.”

And improving they are!  Since joining the Heartland Conference in 2007, the women’s soccer team has never managed more than one win in conference play, a mark they have already equaled and look poised to eclipse in 2012.  The win over the Rattlers was only the third conference win and fourth shutout in program history.  Most impressive of all, the dominating win against St. Mary’s was over a team the Dustdevils had never before beaten.

With the great news pouring in for the program, Coach Arias and the team remained focus on their season long goal.

“We have never before qualified for a conference tournament berth and that is the ultimate aim of this team.  With the talent and depth we have on the pitch this year, I think we are very capable of ending that streak as well.”

The Dustdevils are on the road Tuesday afternoon taking on Huston-Tillotson University at 4 p.m.  A recap and final results will be available Tuesday evening on www.godustdevils.com .
