Medina Strikes Again, Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight

Box Score
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The TAMIU women’s soccer program continues to show they are no longer the team of old.  Despite being outshot 12-5 Monday afternoon, the TAMIU defense held St. Mary’s to only one shot on goal and Sol Medina fired home her second goal of the season to give the Dustdevils a 1-0 win over the Rattlers.

“The girls just played with a determined attitude,” said Head Coach Claudio Arias.  “We defended well and took advantage of the opportunities we were given.  This is a very efficient group of girls who are playing with an entirely new attitude.”

The win gives TAMIU their second conference win of the year, doubling their total from last season and matching their total dating back to 2008. The team’s 3-1 start is the best since the program moved to Division II in 2006.

Coach Arias said the team’s great start is the result of years of hard work.

“I think we were very close to this kind of success over the last few seasons, we just haven’t been consistent enough to achieve the success we’ve had so far this year.  Our goal now is to make sure that we continue this momentum through the rest of the season. “

A big reason for the Dustdevils success so far, is the play of TAMIU Goalkeeper Aissa Pedraza.  The junior from Caquas, Puerto Rico improved to 2-1 on the season with the win, finishing with one save and helping the Dustdevils record their third consecutive shutout.

“We have relied on our defense quite a bit and it all starts with Aissa,” said Coach Arias.  “She is playing at a very high level and our back row is doing everything we have asked of them.”

The Dustdevils now return to Laraedo to face Newman University at Dustdevil Field on Thursday, September 20 at 5 p.m.  The Dustdevils will look for their fourth consecutive win against a Jets team who was TAMIU’s only conference win during the 2011 season.
