TAMIU Trio Powers Dustdevils Over Aggies

Box Score

LAREDO, Texas (January 3) – Tina Dang and Sam Chacon combined for 38 points and Rosebud Guthrie scored a season high 12 points to help lead the TAMIU women’s basketball team over Oklahoma Panhandle State University 75-61 Thursday night at the TAMIU KCB.  TAMIU hit season highs in both points (75) and rebounds (50) as the Dustdevils got back to .500 in conference play at 1-1, while their overall record improved to 4-8.

“It was nice to get this win and we need to build off this game for Saturday,” said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson.  “I know we can play a lot better and we need to be more consistent in certain areas.  I thought we played a solid second half and got some great contributions from our bench.  We are definitely a better team when our bench brings energy and contributes.  I was pleased with the fact that we held them to 28 percent shooting, however, we had too many defensive possessions that ended with fouls and putting Panhandle on the free throw line.  We have a tough challenge on Saturday with Permian Basin and in order to be successful we need to be much more efficient with our defense.”

TAMIU shot 43.5 percent from the field, 55 percent in the second half, and held OPSU to just 28.6 percent.  The Dustdevils outscored the Aggies 38-16 in the paint and 10-2 on fast breaks.  Malika Jackson led on the boards with a game high 12, helping the Dustdevils to a 50-37 advantage on the glass.

Panhandle opened the game with back-to-back buckets prompting a quick time out from the Dustdevils bench.  TAMIU came out of the timeout with four straight points of their own to even the game at four.  The two teams traded buckets over the next ten minutes and it wasn’t until Tina Dang hit a three with 5:29 left to play that got the Dustdevils rolling.  Sam Chacon followed Dang’s three with six straight points, pushing the Dustdevils lead out to 29-19.  TAMIU led by as many as 11 in the opening period, but the Aggies were able to trim the deficit to five closing the half on a 6-0 run.

Panhandle picked up right where they left off in the first half, pushing their run to 11-0 and tying the game at 31.  With the game tied at 37, Dang once again got the Dustdevils going connecting on another three which kick started a an 8-0 run to put TAMIU up 45-37.  From that point on Rosebud Guthrie took over, scoring 10 of her 12 second half points in the final ten minutes of the game to lock up the game for the Dustdevils.  Guthrie finished 5-9 from the field with six boards and two blocks.

TAMIU will be back in action on Saturday hosting UT-Permian Basin at the TAMIU KCB at 2 p.m.  The Dustdevils will be looking to snap a six game losing streak to the Falcons dating back to the 2009-2010 season.
