Box Score LAREDO, Texas – Six players scored in double figures as Texas A&M International ended the 2013 calendar year with a fifth consecutive Heartland Conference win. The Dustdevils hosted and dismantled the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, 81-65, on Saturday at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
Junior guard Jessica Woo led the Dustdevils (9-2, 5-0 HC) with a game-high 17 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Woo, a Fremont, Calif. native, also pulled in a team-high eight rebounds while recording a game-high two steals and an assist. Her rebounds total stands as her season high, and her points and steals totals rank second through her first season in the NCAA Division II.
Sophomore guard Jessica Prieto, a Laredo native, scored 12 points with two assists and steals, and a blocked shot with three rebounds. Senior guard Samantha Chacon, a two-time Heartland Player of the Week, scored 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting from the field and 3-for-6 from the 3-point line.
Stella Ghazarian also scored 11 points, and seniors Re'Nikia Meshack and Malika Jackson each scored 10 points.
The Dustdevils defense forced 15 turnovers and dominated UAFS (2-10, 2-4 HC) in the paint – by a 22-12 margin – while leading the game wire-to wire.
Alexis Thomas and Mason Hawk both scored four points, Bezait Anbesse scored two.
The Dustdevils will return to action on Jan. 2 at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin for a 5:30 p.m. showdown. They will return home on Jan. 9 to take on McMurry at 5:30 p.m.
