LAREDO (February 12) – TAMIU continued its best start in program history Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader over Arlington Baptist College winning 7-4 and 6-1 at Uni-Trade Stadium.  The pair of wins lifts the Dustdevils to 8-0 as TAMIU prepares to return to conference play this weekend with a trip to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith.

The Dustdevils used 11 total pitchers in the doubleheader with Ryan Williams picking up the game one win and Abe Almonte taking the game two decision.

Game one starter Donald Fennell struggled early in the opener giving up three runs on three hits in the top of the first.  With runners on first and second Hector Moreno belted a double into the gap in right center bringing both runners around.  Moreno scored two batters later on a single up the middle.

The Dustdevils came right back with a big two-out rally in the bottom half to capture the lead.  With two on, Alex MCkeon doubled to right center plating Jeff Anderson and Ramon Sandoval to pull TAMIU within one run.  Alex Salas followed with an RBI double down the left field line and Sean Smedley put TAMIU up 4-3 with a single into left.

Hector Gonzalez added another run to the board in the second with an RBI single scoring Alvaro Rondon who led the inning off with a triple down the right field line.

TAMIU opened the fourth with two walks and a bunt single to load up the bases for Ramon Sandoval.  The senior came through with a sac-fly to center field to make it 6-3.  After Gonzalez safely stole second, Anderson scored TAMIU’s final run of the game on a passed ball.

The Patriots picked up a run in the seventh before the Dustdevils retired the side to end the game.

Rondon went 2-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base in the opener, while Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.  Winning pitcher Ryan Williams struck out two and allowed only one hit in two complete innings.

After four three scoreless innings to open the second game, Arlington Baptist took advantage of a TAMIU error to take a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Clint Hall in the fourth.

Once again the Dustdevils would not trail for long, scoring three runs in the bottom half.  Fernie Garza was beaned to lead off and was brought around to score by McKeon’s double to right center.  Salas plated McKeon on a single into right center, before advancing to third off a double by Matt Garcia.  Rick Alanis delivered the Dustdevils fourth straight hit of the inning with a perfectly placed infield single to score Salas, giving TAMIU a 3-1 lead.

TAMIU added three more runs in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch and then getting RBI from Alanis and Anderson.  Alanis was 3-for-3 in the nightcap with a team best two RBI.  Gonzalez, Salas, and Garcia each added a pair of hits with Salas also contributing an RBI.  Abe Almonte struck out two and allowed one run on two hits in two innings in his first win of the season.

Up next the Dustdevils will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith to battle the Lions.   UAFS has accumulated a 3-3 record to start the season, but is coming off a 2-1 series win over no. 1 St. Mary’s University.  The Dustdevils and the Lions will get their series underway on Friday at 1 p.m.
