Dustdevils Sweep Newman, Improve to 12-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAREDO (February 23) – The TAMIU Baseball team continued its hot start with a two game sweep, 5-3 and 9-2, over Newman University Saturday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field.  The Dustdevils improved to 12-2 while Newman fell to 4-8.  Senior center fielder Jeff Anderson contributed four hits on Saturday with four RBI and two runs scored.
 
After allowing two runs in the top of the first, Jerry Hawkins settled in shutting out the Jets over the next five innings before giving way to Dino Cristiani in the seventh.  Cristiani gave up one hit and allowed one unearned run in the seventh before retiring the side for his third save of the season.  Hawkins improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
 
After being held in check over the first two innings, TAMIU capitalized on a costly error in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.  After drawing back-to-back walks to start the inning, Jaron Shimmel came around to score after Newman pitcher Jacob Furr sailed a throw to first trying to get Anderson who was attempting a sacrifice bunt.  Two batters later Fernando Garza tied the game at two with a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Alvaro RondonAlex McKeon tallied TAMIU’s final run of the inning with an RBI single to center to bring around Anderson.
 
The Dustdevils used three hits and took advantage of another Newman miscue to add two more runs in the sixth.  Alex Salas and Shimmel singled before Rondon drew a two-out walk to load the bases.  Anderson then delivered a two-RBI single to right field to extend TAMIU’s lead to 5-2.
 
With one away in the top of the seventh, a throwing error by Salas on an attempted double play allowed a runner to advance to third.  After an RBI single cut the lead to 5-3, TAMIU successfully turned-two 1-6-4 to end the game.
 
In game two the Dustdevils erupted for 13 hits while Newman continued to struggle defensively committing four errors.
 
Anderson led TAMIU with two RBI after going 3-for-5 at the plate.  McKeon and Salas each went 2-for-5, while Hector Gonzalezand McKeon each added two RBI.
 
Abdel Rivera improved to 3-1 on the season tossing seven shutout innings scattering six hits.  Ryan Williams came on to close allowing two runs on two hits in the game’s final two innings.
 
The Dustdevils tallied three runs over the first four innings before exploding for six in the sixth.   With the bases loaded Gonzalez and Garza delivered back-to-back singles to plate two runs before a wild pitch allowed Anderson to score from third to make it 6-0.  McKeon followed with a two-RBI double to left field and came across two batters later on an errant throw to the plate by the Newman center fielder.
 
The Jets scored their only runs of the game in the eighth off an RBI triple and an RBI ground out to second base.
 
TAMIU and Newman will conclude their three-game set Sunday afternoon with the series finale set for a 12 p.m. start at Jorge Haynes Field.
