Box Score LAREDO (February 24) – Newman starting pitcher Anthony Gonzalez threw six shutout innings versus TAMIU helping the Jets to a 7-2 win in Sunday’s series finale at Uni-Trade Stadium. The Dustdevils (9-3 HC) dropped to 12-3 on the season, while the Jets improved to 5-8 (5-7 HC).
Trailing 4-0 through six-and-a-half innings, TAMIU cut the Jets’ lead in half scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Newman added three more in the ninth and held the Dustdevils scoreless in their final two at bats to avoid the series sweep
The Jets banged out 13 hits led by first baseman Ruben Marrero, who finished 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI, lacking only a home run to complete the cycle.

Sean Smedley, and
Alex Salas each recorded two hits for TAMIU, while the rest of the lineup finished 2-for-22.
Early season woes continued for Dustdevils’ starter
Manolo Mendoza, who allowed two runs on seven hits through 2.1 innings. TAMIU used four more pitchers to try and slow down the Jets’ offense, but each pitcher allowed at least one run before it was all said and done.
Stephen Dickerson went 2.2 innings allowing one run on two hits,
Jared Curnel allowed one run on one hit through two innings with one strikeout,
Baylr Bickerton gave up two runs on one hit in 1.1 innings, and
Dino Cristiani allowed one run on two hits in 0.2 innings.
Newman scratched the board first using a leadoff double and back-to-back singles to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Alvaro Rondon turned a 6-3 double play to help TAMIU escape the inning with just minor damage.
The Jets started the third with another single, before advancing the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two singles later, Newman had a 2-0 lead and Dickerson stepped in to replace Mendoza on the mound.
TAMIU had an opportunity to score in the fourth with after Anderson advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pick-off move. With only one out, two consecutive Dustdevils grounded out to strand Anderson at third and keep Newman ahead 2-0.
Newman added runs in the fifth and seventh to make it 4-0, before TAMIU finally got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh.
Fernando Garza led off with a single through the left side and was brought around two batters later on an RBI double by Salas. Smedley followed with an RBI double of his own to plate Salas and bring the Dustdevils within two runs at 4-2.
After a scoreless eighth, the Jets capitalized on an error by TAMIU first baseman
Alex McKeon in the ninth to put the game out of reach. With one away Bickerton issued consecutive walks before a single down the right field line brought a run around to score. McKeon bobbled the relay throw to the infield allowing a second run to come across. The Jets tallied one more RBI single before the end of the inning to take a 7-2 lead.
Salas and Smedley, who combined to go 4-for-7 at the plate with two RBI, each recorded a single in the bottom of the ninth, but
Jaron Shimmel grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
TAMIU will hit the road this weekend, traveling to Abilene to take on conference newcomer McMurry University in a three-game set. The Dustdevils and War Hawks will play a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 1, before concluding the series the following Saturday at 1 p.m.
