Box Score

LAREDO (March 16, 2013) – St. Edward’s University picked up right where they left off in game two Friday night, scoring five runs on five hits in the first inning on their way to a 9-4 win over no.18 TAMIU Saturday afternoon at Uni-Trade Stadium.

The Hilltoppers offense kept chugging along, tagging the Dustdevils for 16 total hits as TAMIU fell to 11-7 in conference play.  St. Edward’s catapulted into first place in the conference standings with the three game sweep over the Dustdevils, while TAMIU fell back to fourth, one game behind Arkansas Fort Smith and two ahead of Newman University.

The Dustdevils play their next seven straight games on the road starting with a non-conference matchup with no. 10 Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday, before returning to conference play with a three-game set at UT-Permian Basin next weekend.

TAMIU scattered 12 hits led by senior center fielder Jeff Anderson who went 4-for-5 and senior catcher Sean Smedley who was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.  Fernando Garza and Alex McKeon each went 2-for-4 with Garza adding two RBI.

The Dustdevils used five pitchers against the Hilltoppers, with the loss going to Baylr Bickerton who fell to 2-1 on the year.  Bickerton allowed back-to-back singles to start the game, before a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third.  The Hilltoppers plated two runs on a single by Ransom LaLonde and then added a third two batters later on a throwing error by Bickerton trying to get a runner at first.  Joe Pirozzolo made it a 5-0 game with a two-RBI single scoring Dylan Watts and CJ Manning.

After giving up another run in the second, Garza gave the Dustdevils their first runs of the game lacing a two-RBI triple to the right center field wall.

St. Edward’s picked up another run in the fourth off reliever Stephen Dickerson, but TAMIU answered with an RBI ground out by Smedley in the bottom half of the innings to make it a 7-3 game.  Hilltoppers second baseman Taylor Johnson, who went 4-for-5 on the day with two-RBI, put St. Edward’s up 9-3 in the fifth with a two-RBI double into left field.  Dickerson allowed three runs on six hits with a strikeout in three innings of work.

Donald Fennell
, Ryan Williams, and Manolo Mendoza combined to shutout the Hilltoppers over the final four innings, but TAMIU was only able to get one run back in the 8th on a RBI-single by Smedley.

TAMIU will face no.10 Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
