Dustdevils Win Fifth Straight, Sweep OPSU

Box Score

GOODWELL, OK. (March 30, 2013) – Matt Garcia recorded TAMIU’s first multiple home run game of the season Saturday afternoon as the Dustdevils rolled to a 10-0 mercy rule win over Oklahoma Panhandle State University to complete their three-game sweep over the Aggies.

Garcia finished with a season-high four hits and belted solo homers in the fifth and eighth innings.  Fernando Garza concluded a brilliant series going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double in the second and a RBI single in the sixth.  The freshman finished the series with eight hits in 12 at bats, four RBI, and five runs scored. Seniors Jaron Shimmel and Sean Smedley were also solid in Saturday’s series finale, each going 2-for-3 with a RBI.

TAMIU racked up 14 hits and dealt OPSU starter Alan Scott his eighth loss of the season.  The Dustdevils took advantage of two OPSU errors to score two unearned runs in the second and added three more in the third off another pair of Aggie miscues.

After Garcia’s homer to lead off the sixth made it a 6-0 TAMIU lead, Shimmel and Alvaro Rondon each drove in runs to put the Dustdevils up 8-0.  Another OPSU error in the sixth allowed Garza to plate TAMIU’s ninth run, before Garcia notched his second home run of the game in the eighth to make It 10-0.  The Aggies finished with six total errors in Saturday’s game.

In his longest outing of the season, Baylr Bickerton improved to 2-1 going seven innings and allowing only four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.  After facing six batters in the first, he never faced more than four in each of the following innings and didn’t allow a batter passed second base.

Jared Curnel threw one inning in relief, striking out the first two batters he faced before giving up a single and then inducing a pop fly to end the game.

The win lifts TAMIU’s conference record to 16-8 on the season and moves the Dustdevils into a second place tie in the conference standings with St. Edward’s University.

TAMIU will step out of conference on Tuesday to host Texas A&M Kingsville, before returning to conference action hosting the University of Arkansas Fort Smith in a crucial series next weekend.  The Dustdevils and the Javelinas will get underway at 6 p.m. at Uni-Trade Stadium.
