Newman Takes Game Three, Series

Box Score WICHITA, Kansas (April 13, 2013) – TAMIU stranded 10 runners on base and committed four errors allowing Newman University to take the series finale 7-1 Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Field.

The Dustdevils put 10 hits on the board but finished 1-10 with runners in scoring position as TAMIU slipped to 23-17 (18-12 HC) on the season.  The Dustdevils still remain a game and half ahead of Arkansas Fort Smith (16-11) for fourth place in the conference standings, while Newman pulled to within 3.5 games of TAMIU.

TAMIU starter Dino Cristiani lasted only 3.1 innings allowing six runs on eight hits, before giving way to Baylr Bickerton.  Bickerton held the Jets to just one run on four hits over the next 3.2 innings and closer Manolo Mendoza threw a scoreless eighth.

The Dustdevils started quickly, opening the game with back-to-back singles by Alvaro Rondon and Jeff Anderson with Rondon advancing to third.  After Anderson was caught stealing, Alex Salas gave TAMIU their only run of the game on a RBI single up the middle.  Salas led TAMIU offensively finishing 3-for-4 at the plate.  Alex Zykoff grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Two errors in the bottom half of the inning allowed the Jets to take a 2-1 lead and then Kyle Johnston made it 4-1 with a two run homer in the second.

The Jets led off the fourth with a double and moved the runner to third on a sacrifice.  After a RBI single made it 5-1, Cristiani was pulled for Bickerton.  Newman followed with a stolen base and another RBI single to go up 6-1.  An error by second baseman Jaron Shimmel allowed the Jets to take a 7-1 lead.

Newman retired 15 of the next 18 TAMIU hitters to close the game, only two of which reached second base in the process.

TAMIU will step out of conference for their next four straight games, facing Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday, April 17 before hosting McMurry University in a three-game set starting on April 19.
