TAMIU, Newman Split Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WICHITA, Kansas  (April 12, 2013) – With the TAMIU baseball team closing in on punching their ticket to the post season, the Dustdevils picked up a crucial 4-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Newman University after dropping game one 3-1.

Newman starter Jacob Furr outdueled TAMIU starter Jerry Hawkins in the early game, holding the Dustdevils to just two hits in a complete game effort.  Hawkins (3-4) allowed only five hits over six innings, but a few miscues in the fourth allowed the Jets to score all the runs they would need.

After retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced over the first three innings, Hawkins hit a batter, gave up two hits, and threw a wild pitch allowing Newman to score all of their runs in the fourth.

TAMIU loaded the bases with two outs in the top half of the inning, but were only able to put one run on the board when Hector Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch.  Furr retired nine of the next ten TAMIU batters to pick up his fifth win of the year.

Alex McKeon and Jeff Anderson were the only two TAMIU players to record hits in the opening game.

After two scoreless innings to start game two, the Dustdevils broke the deadlock with a big third inning.  Sean Smedley’s leadoff homerun was followed by an Alvaro Rondon single and a double by Anderson to put TAMIU up 2-0.  Anderson, who moved to third on a throw to the plate in the previous play, was then brought home on a sacrifice fly by Alex Salas.  Salas added his second RBI of the game in the fifth, driving home Jaron Shimmel on a two-out single to make it 4-0.

An error by Rondon in the seventh allowed Tanner Vinson to reach second base with no outs.  After a walk and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position, Terrell Brown plated the Jets only run of the game on a fielder’s choice.  Relief pitcher Jared Curnel struck out the next batter and then retired the next six straight to pick up his first save of the year.

Game two starter Abdel Rivera improved to 8-1 on the season, scattering six hits with a walk and a strikeout over 6.2 innings.  Curnel allowed only one hit with a walk and a strikeout over the final 2.1 innings.

Shimmel was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Rondon and Alex Zykoff each went 2-for-4.

TAMIU improved to 23-16 on the season (18-11 HC), while the Jets moved to 17-18 (13-14 HC).  The Dustdevils will look to pick up the series clinching win in tomorrow’s series finale set for 12 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
