No.10 A&M Kingsville Snaps Dustdevils Winning Streak

Box Score LAREDO (March 2, 2013) – No. 10 Texas A&M Kingsville used a fast start and took advantage of four TAMIU errors to slingshot past the Dustdevils 6-3 Tuesday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.
 
The loss snapped the Dustdevils’ five game winning streak and dropped TAMIU to 21-13 on the season, while TAMUK moved to 21-13
 
The Javelinas strung together four hits to score four runs in the second off TAMIU starter Donald Fennell (1-1).  The Dustdevils got a run back in the fourth off Matt Garcia's third home run of the year and added two late RBI by Grant Garrett and Sean Smedley, but Kingsville scored runs in the sixth and seventh to put the game out of reach. 
 
Cody Williams improved to 2-3 on the year, allowing only one run on three hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. 
 
The Dustdevils trotted seven different pitchers out to the mound in the losing effort.  Stephen Dickerson threw a scoreless third before giving way to Ryan Williams who threw two no-hit innings.  Abraham Almonte gave up a run on three hits in the sixth and Fernando Garza, the Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week, gave up a run on two hits in the seventh.  Jared Curnel and Manolo Mendoza combined to throw two no-hit innings to close the game.
 
Senior center fielder Jeff Anderson was the sole Dustdevil to record multiple hits finishing 2-for-3.
 
TAMIU remains tied for second place in the conference standings with St. Edward’s University with 16-8 conference records.  The Dustdevils will host the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, who trails TAMIU by two games, in a pivotal home series this weekend.
 
Friday’s doubleheader against the Lions will get underway at 12 p.m. at Uni-Trade Stadium.
