Hawkins Named Conference Pitcher of the Week

LAREDO (April 22, 2013) – TAMIU starting pitcher Jerry Hawkins was named Heartland Conference pitcher of the week by conference officials Monday afternoon, after helping the Dustdevils to a 9-0 win over McMurry University this weekend.

The senior from Phoenix, Arizona held the War Hawks to just two hits with a season-high seven strikeouts and one walk in his third complete game of the year.  Over the final four innings he faced just one batter over the minimum.

With the win over McMurry, Hawkins improved to 4-4 on the season with a 3.88 ERA.

“It was much deserved,” Dustdevils head coach Chad Porter said. “Jerry has battled through injuries all year and he’s just a gamer. He wants the ball and lays it all on the line for his teammates whenever he gets the baseball.

“He put together a really good game last week and it’s very good for him and the team.”

The Dustdevils took 2-of-3 from the War Hawks improving to 25-19 on the year, the second best mark in program history.  TAMIU remains one game behind the University of Arkansas Fort Smith (19-11) and St. Edward’s University (19-11) for third place in the conference standings.  The Dustdevils (18-12) hold a three game lead over Newman University (16-16) for the final spot in the upcoming Heartland Conference Tournament.

TAMIU has six games remaining on their conference schedule, hosting St. Mary’s University (25-7) this weekend at Jorge Haynes Field, before traveling to Austin to close the regular season at St. Edward’s.  The Dustdevils can clinch a berth in the post season with one win in their final six games coupled with a Newman loss in one of their final three games at Arkansas Fort Smith.
