LAREDO (April 26, 2013) - St. Mary’s swept Texas A&M International in Heartland Conference action on Friday afternoon at Jorge Haynes Field.  The league-leading Rattlers took the opener 3-1 before claiming a 4-1 win in game two.  The Rattlers got two complete game pitching performances in the sweep, limiting the Dustdevils to a combined two runs on eight hits.

The Rattlers led 1-0 in the opener until Alex McKeon tied the score for the Dustdevils with a line drive RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning.  St. Mary’s answered with one run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings while in the meantime TAMIU did not get a runner into scoring position over the last three innings of the seven inning game against St. Mary’s starter Rene Solis.

Jerry Hawkins (4-5) took the loss for the Dustdevils.  He allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 innings of work.

TAMIU (25-21, 18-14 Heartland) took the early lead in game two when Alex Salas, batting third, drove in Alvaro Rondon with a RBI single to right field.  The Dustdevils would advance a runner to third base in the second and third innings against Rattler starter Matt McClain but could not punch in any additional runs.

St. Mary’s (34-12, 27-7) took the lead in the fourth inning with RBI doubles by Mario Maldonado, Al Gonzalez and Weston Helligman against Dustdevil starter Abdel Rivera.

McClain took control after his offense provided him the lead, allowing only one hit and facing only two batters over the minimum over the final five innings.  Fernando Garza lined a one out double to right center in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Dustdevils but the threat ended on a fly out to right field by Jaron Shimmel and a ground out by Jeff Anderson.

Rivera (9-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 7.0 innings.  Stephen Dickerson allowed one run in 2.0 innings of relief work.
