Historic Season Ends for TAMIU Baseball

Box Score
Texas A&M International’s best season ever as a NCAA Division II member ended with a 9-3 loss to St. Mary’s on Saturday in semifinal round action of the Heartland Conference Tournament in San Antonio.
Amongst the landmark achievements accomplished by the Dustdevils this season was the program’s first winning season(27-26) in five years as an Division II active member and the program’s first Heartland Conference Tournament win, a 4-3 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday.

St. Mary’s took a 4-0 read with a four-run top of the third inning.
The big blow in that frame was a bases loaded three-RBI double to the left field corner by Alex Gonzalez off of TAMIU starter
Baylr Bickerton.
Alex Salas and Alex McKeon led off the bottom of the fourth inning with singles for the Dustdevils.  They would later score on RBI singles by Fernando Garza and Jaron Shimmel to cut the Rattler lead to 4-2.
The score stood at 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Hector Gonzalez and Salas hit back-to-back one out singles to place runners on first and second base.  The threat ended, however, when McKeon grounded into an inning-ending double play.
St. Mary’s (37-14) starter Ryan O’Neal allowed only one base runner over the next two innings and that was on a walk to Jeff Anderson in the seventh inning.  In the meantime, the Rattlers tacked on three runs  in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh inning to build a 8-2 lead.  Two of the runs in the sixth inning were scored on a throwing error to first base on a pick-off attempt by Dustdevil reliever Jared Curnel.
TAMIU cut the lead to 8-3 on a sharp RBI single by Sean Smedley in the eighth inning.  The Dustdevils had the bases loaded two batters later but the inning ended on a fly to center field by Anderson.
Bickerton (2-4) took the loss for the Dustdevils.  He allowed four runs on four hits in 2.0 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
O’Neal (12-2) earned the win for the Rattlers after allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 7.2 innings.
