St. Edwward's Tops TAMIU in Season Finale

Box Score AUSTIN (May 4, 2013) - #22 St. Edward’s defeated Texas A&M International 7-1 in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton on the SEU campus in Austin.

TAMIU had plenty of base runners but could not punch anything across against St. Ed’s pitchers Paul Smith and Collin Sherrod, who held the Dustdevil scoreless on five hits through the first 7.1 innings of play.  The Dustdevils stranded seven batters through the first seven innings before scoring in the top of the eighth inning.

With two outs in the eighth, Alex McKeon drove a ball to the left field fence.  He advanced to second and stopped, due to the fact that it appeared the Hilltopper left fielder could not retrieve the ball that he indicated was stuck under the fence.  After some confusion and no official ruling from the umpiring crew, McKeon dashed to third base and then home to be rewarded with an odd inside the park home run to cut the SEU lead to 4-1.

Ramon Sandoval then walked before reaching second a passed ball.  Fernie Garza then drilled a sharp liner to center field and Sandoval tried to score but he was gunned down on an outstanding throw by Ryan Dolezal.

St. Edward’s blew the game open with three runs on four hits with one error in the bottom of the eighth.

Baylr Bickerton (2-3) took the loss for the Dustdevils.  He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.

TAMIU will have a short week of practice before starting play in the Heartland Conference Tournament on Thursday.  The schedule hasn’t been set but it is known that the Dustdevils will open play in their second Heartland Conference in three years against St. Mary’s.
