GUNNISON, Colo. – A two-game road trip into the Colorado Mountains and ending at the University of Texas at Brownsville offered its share of challenges to the Texas A&M International women’s soccer team, starting with the previously 1-1-0 Western State Colorado on Friday.
The Mountaineers improved to 2-1-0 after Courtnee Urrea scored in the 23rd minute off an Izzy Engeman through ball to deliver a 1-0 victory over the Dustdevils (0-4-0). The Mountaineers dug in and silenced the Dustdevils’ offense, outshooting the visitors 26-4 – with all four TAMIU shots soaring in the second half.
TAMIU’s starting center back Paige Johnson and substitute forward Chelsea Connor offered the only action on frame, forcing WSCU goalkeeper Meghan Jedrzejewski to make saves on both to maintain her cleansheet.
Jessica Parker and Katelin Jennings fired the team’s only two other shots.
Sam Zerilli and Johnson were cautioned by the center official in the 39th and 81st minutes, respectively. WSCU’s Emily Burton also saw yellow in the 83rd minute.
The Dustdevils will face Adams State in Alamosa, Colo., on Sunday at noon before returning to Texas to face UTB in Brownsville on Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. The Dustdevils will play at home against Heartland Conference rival St. Mary’s on Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the TAMIU Soccer Complex.
