CANYON, Texas – A home goal per period on Saturday soured Texas A&M International’s visit to West Texas A&M’s campus in Canyon, Texas. The 2-0 loss concluded the Dustdevils’ crippling long four-match road trip through Colorado, New Mexico and Western Texas.
All in all, TAMIU stands at 1-4-1 with a refreshing four-match home stand looming. The Dustdevils return to the TAMIU Soccer Complex on Sept. 27 to host their Heartland Conference opener against St. Mary’s at 5 p.m.
Against the Buffs, the Dustdevils played an even match through the first half hour, but Austin Henderson bulged the net with a far-side cross from George Beasley in the 28th minute. He took the ball at the top of the penalty box and put enough movement on his shot to slide by TAMIU goalkeeper Jesus Cisneros.
Nearly 30 minutes later, Chase Withrow buried his third goal of the year in the 66th minute. Again, Beasley centered a cross for his second assist of the match. That served as the ultimate deflator to TAMIU’s hopes of a comeback as Buffs keeper Garrett Cooper kept the Dustdevils shut out with four saves.
TAMIU was outshot in the match 18-10 and 6-4 in shots on goal. TAMIU’s Adrian Elicerio, Nick Coronado, Camilo Botero and captain Arturo Gutierrez were the only Dustdevils to attack Cooper’s frame, ultimately unsuccessfully.
The two teams were fairly even in fouls committed, with TAMIU hearing the whistle 14 times and the Buffs hearing it 13. TAMIU’s Jonathan Saldana was cautioned in the 35th minute.
