LAREDO, Texas – Taking a break from Heartland Conference competition while promoting breast cancer awareness was just what Texas A&M International University needed, cruising to a convincing 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-19) victory over Huston-Tillotson on Friday night. The Dustdevils (2-15, 1-9 Heartland) wore their pink jerseys and the entire evening's gate and concession proceeds will be donated to a local charity.
TAMIU never trailed in the game. The Rams never tied the score either.
The Dustdevils were utterly unstoppable on offense, slamming a .337 hitting percentage with an average of 12.5 kills per set. Senior Alex Ciszek rifled 10 kills, an ace and two blocks to settle for 12 points. Samantha Gonzalez killed off seven attacks with three blocks to tally 8.5 points, Tasmin Apple scored eight points off kills, and Miaje Hubbard (5 points) Caitlinn Williams (6.5 points, 3 blocks) each had five kills.
Lizzie Prieto had two kills, three aces and two blocks to tally six points, but it was the transition game that saw her shine brightest. She converted 29 of the Dustdevils total 37 assists.
Apple and Williams each contributed two assists while Ciszek, Alejandra Bustamante, Koral Wright and Sophia Quinones each had one.
Ciszek and Quinones led the Dustdevils on defense with nine and eight digs, respectively. Wright had five, Hubbard and Williams had four, and Prieto, Apple and Bustamante each had two.
TAMIU hosts Heartland rival St. Edward's in its final Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
