LAREDO, Texas – In its fourth match in seven days, Texas A&M International met Midwestern State for the second time this season and the first at the TAMIU Soccer Complex on Saturday. The Dustdevils (8-7-1) opened the scoring with a clinical combination of precise passing in just the 16th minute, but the Mustangs recoiled with a massive 5-goal second half for the, 5-1, victory.
The initial stanza saw both teams on level terms, statistically. The Dustdevils launched five shots – just one behind the visitors – and saw goalkeeper Salomon Moctezuma convert three saves. But MSU blurred four goals into the back of the net in a 10 minute span, beginning in the 57th minute.
The Dustdevils successful strike was Eduardo Gonzalez's fifth goal in the last six matches to pull just three goals behind Jovany Macias for the team lead. Gonzalez crashed the far post after fellow forward Tayeb Ahmadi flared through a pair of Mustang defenders. Gonzalez applied the simple tap-in tally for a lead that lasted more than 40 minutes.
The Dustdevils, who have already clinched a Heartland Conference tournament berth, will close their home season on Monday with a hosting of St. Mary's at 7:30 p.m. The TAMIU women will host St. Mary's immediately prior, with a 5 p.m. kickoff. Both matches will serve as senior day, honoring both TAMIU teams' graduating class.
