LAREDO, Texas – Fireworks in the final five minutes saw Texas A&M International University force overtime against Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's on Monday at the TAMIU Soccer Complex. The Dustdevils equalized in the 89th minute before eventually dropping the result, 2-1, in the second overtime period.
"Again, it was an unforced error that gave the game away," TAMIU coach Claudio Arias said. "We played well enough to win, but one loss of focus and one mistake took it all away. We have to get better and we cannot beat ourselves anymore."
The Dustdevils maintained the scoreless struggle with the Rattlers through 76 minutes, before falling behind when a close-range rebound found the back of Salomon Moctezuma's net. The junior goalkeeper played with obvious discomfort after absorbing a first-half knock. He eventually exited in the 95th minute after making five saves. Chris Biddulph closed the game's final 12 minutes.
The match's drama reach deafening decibels when the Dustdevils crashed St. Mary's net with less than 80 seconds left. Junior forward Tayeb Ahmadi challenged a trio of defenders before looping a low cross onto the boots of Eduardo Gonzalez. The Laredo native volleyed the hip-high cross for his sixth goal in seven games.
The Dustdevils will next face their season finale at St. Edward's in Austin on Nov. 3 before entering the first ever Heartland Conference men's soccer tournament.
