LAREDO, Texas – Texas A&M International University overcame crippling odds on Saturday while hosting Heartland Conference rival St. Mary's at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. Trailing the Rattlers 2-1, TAMIU constructed an unforgettable comeback – including bounce backs from 6-0 and 6-1 deficits in the fourth and fifth sets, respectively – to win, 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 14-25, 25-19, 16-14).
"We really played calmly and with a lot of confidence," TAMIU coach Marlon Sano said. "Once again, Miaje Hubbard played physically. Sarah Truman came off the bench to really make a difference and Caitlinn Williams served very well to key our big comeback in the fourth set."
Two of the three Dustdevil victories went beyond regulation, but all three saw the Dustdevils rebound from deficits. TAMIU trailed 15-11 in the second set before railing off six consecutive points en route to seizing the set. Again, in the fourth set, TAMIU trailed 7-0 and later 12-4 before a massive 13-point rally. Finally, in the final set, the Dustdevils trailed 10-5 before eight of 10 points to win the match.
Hubbard hit hardest with 26 kills and a block for a game-high 27 points. Alex Ciszek killed off 12 plays with two blocks, Caitlinn Williams had seven kills and two aces, Tasmin Apple had six kills and three blocks, Samantha Gonzalez had four kills and two blocks and Lizzie Prieto had a pair of kills, aces and blocks.
Prieto led the way with a game-high 50 assists – all but five of TAMIU's total.
The Dustdevils will return to action with a non-conference visit to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 28 before meeting Oklahoma Panhandle State on Oct. 30.
