WICHITA, Kan. – In its fourth overtime period in as many matches, Texas A&M International produced a reverberating road victory in the Heartland Conference opener. The Dustdevils (3-3-3, 1-0-0 Heartland) manufactured a 98th minute moment of magic to defeat Newman, 1-0, on Saturday.A chaotic corner kick conversion from Claudia de Lara climaxed an eventful – and uncomfortable – visit to Newman. Inclement weather in North Texas cancelled the Dustdevils flight to Kansas on Friday, forcing the team to complete an exhausting 12 hours of travel before kicking off at 5 p.m.
"This team showed an incredible amount of resiliency," TAMIU coach Claudio Arias said. "To go through what they did – including waking up at 5 a.m., catching two flights and immediately playing an overtime game – is a confirmation of their character.
"There were chances to win the match for us and we knew we could take advantage of one if our defense kept us alive. The entire team's defensive effort did so much more than keep us alive, they played so well; it was fitting that a defender (de Lara) won the game with her goal."
De Lara found her game-winning opportunity after a corner kick careened off a quartet of both Newman and TAMIU players inside the 6-yard box. With Jets' goalkeeper Kayleigh Renfro off her line and out of position, de Lara poetically pushed the ball into the back of the net from the far post.
TAMIU keeper Chelsea Knaack and her backline kept the cleansheet intact, with Knaack finishing six saves.
The Dustdevils next travel to Rogers State for a mid-day Monday showdown, kicking off at noon on Oct. 6.
