1st Place Dustdevils Remain Undefeated With Win at RSU

TAMIU claims 2nd consecutive OT decision

{cke_protected}{C}{cke_protected}{C}{cke_protected}{C}CLAREMORE, Okla. – Texas A&M International University opened its Heartland Conference schedule with back-to-back road matches, and – for the first time since 2012 – opened with consecutive overtime victories. The Dustdevils (4-3-3, 2-0-0 Heartland) survived a 2-goal comeback by Rogers State, winning 3-2 in the 96th minute on Monday.

After the pair of overtime victories – including a 1-0 win at Newman on Oct. 4 – the Dustdevils have played in four games that have gone beyond regulation, winning two, losing one and drawing one. With the wins, TAMIU sits atop the Heartland in a 3-way tie with the similarly undefeated St. Edward's and St. Mary's.

Monday saw the visitors fly into a 2-goal lead off junior Kim Garcia's brace in the opening 30 minutes. The fleet-footed center forward struck first in the 18th minute, toeing a cross from Jessica Parker. Fifteen minutes later, Garcia completed her brace with a well-followed rebound off her initially saved shot. After being fed by Rebecca Bell, Garcia's close-range blast bounced off the Hillcats goalkeeper's chest and onto Garcia's well-timed second shot.

The goals were Garcia's team-leading sixth and seventh of the season.

The Dustdevils lead floated until the 67th minute. A penalty kick was awarded and converted by RSU to cut the Dustdevils' lead in half. The Hillcats equalized six minutes later to eventually force overtime.

In the sixth minute of overtime, it was again Garcia and Bell linking up. But Garcia's ambitious attack was denied by the underside of the crossbar, but it found freshman Anna Jeronimo off the bounce. Jeronimo's score was the first of her career, with her entering the match as a substitute 45 seconds before striking.

The first-place Dustdevils will now return to the TAMIU Soccer Complex on Oct. 11 to host Lubbock Christian in their Heartland home opener.
